Visa

General Information

With affect from 1st January 2012 all foreign travelers planning a  holiday visit, a short business trip or to transit through need to apply and obtain Electronic Travel Authorization  ( ETA ) prior to arrival in Sri Lanka.

Visitors who already possess a valid Sri Lankan passport or valid residence permit in Sri Lanka do not need a visa to enter Sri Lanka.


The ETA initially limited to 30 days stay in Sri Lanka from the date of arrival although, it may be extended for up to three months from the Department of Immigration & Emigration, Sri Lanka ( www.immigration.gov.lk )

Transit visa up to 48 hours currently issued free of charge (but must have ETA reference number)

Nationals from Republic of Singapore & Maldives who visit Sri Lanka for a short visit up to 30 days are exempt from ETA.

Crew members of flights & ships do not requires a visa.

ETA can be obtained by the following methods

1. Port of Entry in Sri Lanka:  for last minute travelers who need to visit Sri Lanka with out prior ETA approval, a limited facility to obtain ETA is available at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.  Additional fee will apply.

 

2. Online ETA System:  Submit visa application through the ETA system at www.eta.gov.lk and pay visa fee by visa, master or American Express cards  credit/debit cards ).  Applicant must input personal details including e-mail address.  Acknowledgement will receive within 24 hours and Confirmation ( ETA number ) will receive within 03 working days.  It will valid for 30 days only.

(ETA number) of the visa which should be shown at the Colombo International Airport during the immigration procedure.

When applying ETA by third parties payments are to be made through the arrangement made in ETA website   http://www.eta.gov.lk and obtain acknowledgement of ETA application. Any payments made to other websites or agencies are not valid to process a valid ETA.  Therefore, always endure that the payments made by accessing to Sri Lanka ETA website and avoid making repayment at the port of entry to Sri Lanka.

 

3. At the Embassy :  Those who are not in a position to apply online or unable to submit applications online, may submit application to this Embassy.

 

  ( This Mission can issue visa for a maximum period of 90 days for tourists & businessman visiting Sri Lanka )

 

Requirements for tourist / business Visa if applying through  the Embassy :

1.        Duly completed visa application form with signature. Please clearly write applicant's name, address and telephone number

2.        Two recent passport size photos

3.        Valid Passport with at least one unused visa page. The Passport should be valid for six months from the date of departure from Sri Lanka after the intended visit

4.        Apart from Belgian passport holders other should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium

5.        Copy of air ticket or cruise-ship reservation

6.        For business visa proof concerning the purpose of the visit

Important :- copy of the letter of invitation by the Sri Lankan company/ organization to

                   the applicant  and  a formal letter from the company /organization in

                   Belgium or Luxembourg  requesting for a visa to the person concerned  

                   with a brief introduction about the company, nature of business and details

                   of contact person/company in Sri Lanka should be attached as proof when

                   applying business visa.

Important:-

Prior approval for visa is required for persons proceeding to Sri Lanka for Educational assignments/ academic research, employment, voluntary work in social service organizations and non governmental organizations, officers designated to Diplomatic  Missions in Sri Lanka and other International Organizations  or to join their spouses in Sri Lanka.

 

Diplomatic and  Official Visits

 

Foreign nationals intending to visit Sri Lanka for Diplomatic or Official purposes should forward the following documents to this Embassy to obtain prior approval from Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo.  Therefore please submit relevant documents well in advance to obtain prior approval. 

1.    note verbal issued by their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs

2.    Dully filled application

3.    Two recent passport size photos

4.    Valid Passport  ( more than 6 months )

5.    Apart from Belgian passport holders other should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium

6.    Copy of air ticket or cruise-ship reservation

The Gratis ETA /visa will be granted  after obtain prior approval from Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo and with consultation of Department of Immigration & Emigration in Colombo.

Diplomatic and Official passport holders should not apply tourist/business ETA for their official visits or to engage in any official assignment in Sri Lanka.

Diplomatic and Official passport holders should follow the normal ETA application procedure for their personal visits.

 Work / Residence Visa

Visa for this purpose will be issued only by the Controller General, Immigration and Emigration ( CG, I & E )

Business organizations/ company  or NGO in Sri Lanka ( Sri Lankan counterpart ) should submit application for work/ resident visa on behalf of the applicant directly to the CG, I & E.  The CG, I & E will then authorize this Embassy to issue entry visa to the applicant.

On receipt of the approval from Controller General, Immigration and Emigration ( CG, I & E ), the Embassy could issue entry visa once the applicant submits the documents mentions under.

Once the applicant arrive in Sri Lanka on an entry visa issued by the Embassy, with the approval of the Controller General, Immigration and Emigration ( CG, I & E ), persons can obtain residence visa / work permit from the CG, I & E on arrival in Sri Lanka.

Requirements for entry visa

1.    Duly completed visa application - form B / application for entry visa

2.    Two identity photos per person

3.    Valid Passport with at least one unused visa page

4.    Clearance letter from the Controller General, Immigration and Emigration ( CG, I & E ) or Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo

5.    Apart from Belgian passport holders other should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium

6.    Copy of air ticket

Visa for Media Personnel/Journalists , Photographers & Film Crews

The Embassy requires prior approval from the Ministry of External Affairs in Sri Lanka to issue visa under this category and therefore applications should be made at least  2 weeks in advance.

Request letter addressed to the Embassy from the relevant media institution, including a copy of the Curriculum Vitae of the journalist, description of the nature of the assignment to be carried out in Sri Lanka, details of any appointments sought from Government officials, description of the media equipment to be taken to Sri Lanka and a copy of the passport.  

For film crews; details of the planned synopsis of the film, duration, locations, the names and passport details of the media personnel visiting Sri Lanka should be annexed with the request letter.  And it is mandatory for those filming in Sri Lanka to sign the Condition for Filming Agreement.

All media personnel are required to hold a carnet for the media equipment taken into the country.  The carnet should be need to be submitted to the authorities in Sri Lanka to take the media equipment in to Sri Lanka.

For filming in wildlife-protected areas, prior approval from the Department of Wildlife conservation should be obtained.  Web address :   http://www.dwc.gov.lk

On the receipt of the approval from the Sri Lankan authorities, the Embassy will issue visa once the applicant submit the document  mentioned below.

1.    Duly completed visa application for each member

2.    Two identity photos per person

3.    Valid Passport with at least one unused visa page

4.    Dully completed agreement & Clearance from the Sri Lankan authorities

5.    Apart from Belgian passport holders other should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium

6.    Equipment list and carnet

7.    Copy of air ticket
