Registration of Birth outside Sri Lanka

Under Section 7 of the Consular Functions Act, the Embassy exercises the power to register a birth of a child born to Sri Lankan parents, in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The application for the registration of birth must be made within 3 months of the birth. If the birth is registered after 3 months, it has to be done under a separate process, which takes considerable time. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to register the birth within 3 months.

When an application is made for the registration of a birth under the Births and Deaths Registration Ordinance, an application for the registration of the child under the Citizenship Act should also be made.

The application form for the registration of birth is available on our website and can be downloaded. Alternatively, forms could be obtained over the counter at the Consular Section of the Embassy or by post, sending a self-addressed retun stamped envelope with a request. Application forms should be filled in English.

The Birth registration fee of € 55 (additional € 8 for each year delayed) must be paid over the counter in cash.

Applicants should come in person with the child along with the required documents for the registration. In normal circumstances both parents should be present with the child.
