Sri Lanka's 68th Anniversary of Independence celebrated in Belgium and Luxembourg

Sri Lankans in Belgium participated in the Independence Day ceremony held at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brussels on 4th February 2016.

The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag and the singing of the National Anthem in both official languages followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, observing two minutes silence in memory of all those, who have died in the service of the motherland. Thereafter, the multi-religious observances were conducted by religious dignitaries of the four main faiths in Sri Lanka. The Independence Day Messages of H. E. The President, Hon. Prime Minister and Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs were read by Embassy Staff. H. E. Rodney Perera, Ambassador of Sri Lanka addressed the gathering and referred to Sri Lanka's achievements in the past year particularly, the steps taken to bring about reconciliation and economic development. He also referred to the country's achievements since independence, particularly in the areas of human development and environmental protection. This was followed by the serving of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine to the guests.

The Independence Day reception for the diplomatic corps, Heads of EU institutions, and other foreign dignitaries was held at the Official Residence of the Ambassador on the evening of 4th February 2016. A large and distinguished gathering attended.

Ambassador Rodney Perera and Embassy Staff visited Luxembourg on 7th February 2016 to attend the Independence commemoration ceremony organised by the Sri Lankan community in Luxembourg. A representative gathering of Sri Lankans participated.
