National Day Celebrations in Brussels

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Belgium celebrated the 69th Anniversary of Sri Lanka's National Day in Brussels on 4th February 2017 at the Auditorium of the Brussels Press Club. The event was attended by over 100 Sri Lankans from Belgium and Luxembourg.

The National Day event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka H. E. Mr. Rodney Perera and the singing of the national anthem in Sinhala and Tamil. This was followed by the observance of 1 minute silence in memory of all those who died in the service of the country. Thereafter the traditional oil lamp was lighted by the Ambassador, Hony. Consuls in Antwerp and Luxembourg and representatives of the Sri Lanka Community in Belgium and Luxembourg. This was followed by multi-religious observances conducted by Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic religious dignitaries. The messages of the President, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs were thereafter read by members of the staff of the Embassy in the official languages of Sri Lanka and also in English.

Ambassador Rodney Perera thereafter addressed the gathering and referred to the work carried out by this Embassy in fulfilling the policies and programs of the Government. He also referred to the visit of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in October last year and the visit of the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade last month. He stated that many steps have been taken to strengthen relations with Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU.

Thereafter, cultural items were performed by the children of the Sri Lankan Community in Belgium and Luxembourg with a focus on national unity and reconciliation. Children representing all communities in Sri Lanka participated.

At the end of the official ceremony traditional Sri Lankan food was served to all the guests.

On 08th February 2017, Ambassador Rodney Perera hosted a diplomatic reception at the Official Residence. Over hundred guests including Ambassadors, representatives of the Belgian Government, European Union Officials, representatives of the business sector, civil society organisations and other distinguished visitors from Belgium and Luxembourg attended the reception.
