Sri Lankan nationals (either one or both parties ) who wish to marry in Belgium, under the Sri Lanka law and customs should contact the Consular Division of this Embassy personally regarding registering your marriage.

The lawful age of marriage is 18 years. Accordingly any female or male less than 18 years of age has no provision to marry legally.

Important information:

One of the parties to the marriage should be a Sri Lankan citizen and should give notice of marriage to the Embassy.  The marriage may be registered in the Embassy after a lapse of twelve (12) working days from the date of receipt of the  notice of marriage at the Embassy, and within 3 months from such date.

Supporting Documents:    

1.    Valid passport of both parties

2.    Original Birth Certificates with English translation

3.    Valid residence permit

4.    Notice of  Marriage

5.    Affidavit about civil status being eligible to marry (Unmarried Certificate) 

(should be certified & attested by the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium/Luxembourg

6.    For applicants who are divorcees in Belgium/ Luxembourg or widow/ widower whose spouses has  passed away in Belgium/ Luxembourg following additional documents required;

$1·         Original Death Certificate of former spouse

$1·         Certification from town hall/ Commune of the applicant’s residing area confirming he/she has not registered a marriage

$1·         Divorce Certificate

(if these documents are in local language English translation should be annexed. And all the documents should be certified & attested by Consular Division of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium/Luxembourg)

Marriage between two Sri Lankans

1.    Both parties should obtain an unmarried certificate issued by a Justice of Peace or Grama Niladhari in the applicant’s village which should be certified & attested by the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka.

Marriage between a Sri Lankan citizen and non – Sri Lankan citizen

1.    Sri Lankan citizen should obtain an unmarried certificate issued by a Justice of Peace or Grama Niladhari in the applicant’s village which should be certified & attested by the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka.

2.    If one of the parties is a Belgian citizen, the unmarried certificate should obtain from the relevant town hall/ Commune which should be legalized from the Belgian Foreign Ministry. (with English translation)

3.    If one of the parties is a foreign national, the unmarried certificate should be certified and attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the respective country and attested by the Sri Lankan Embassy.

4.    Other supporting documents as mentioned above.
